Broader SACCO Compliance Challenges Continue to Haunt the Sector

Although not within the last 48 hours, broader reporting confirms that a large number of SACCOs in Kenya have historically struggled with timely audit compliance. A recent analysis found approximately 25,000 SACCOs at risk of deregistration for failing to file required audited accounts, posing significant risks to the cooperatives movement and potentially exposing billions of shillings in members’ deposits to mismanagement.

This backdrop of non-compliance underscores the regulatory pressure intensifying around SACCO governance, particularly as regulators signal potential bans on audit firms that fail to provide mandatory statutory reports a measure designed to force better financial discipline and protect members’ interests.
